ABSTRACT
Contemporary evangelism is increasingly practiced within a cultural environment shaped by pluralism, relativism, digital mediation, and suspicion toward exclusive truth claims. In this setting, many churches seek to make the gospel culturally accessible by emphasizing contextual relevance, practical strategy, and communicative adaptability. While such efforts are often necessary, they also carry a serious theological risk: evangelism may remain active as a ministry program while gradually losing its Christological center. The problem is therefore not merely methodological but theological, because the church’s mission derives its meaning, content, authority, and goal from the person and work of Jesus Christ (Bosch 2011; Wright 2006; Stott 2008).
This study examines the Christological foundations of contemporary evangelism through a qualitative theological approach based on library research, biblical-theological analysis, and critical engagement with major scholarship in Christology and missiology. The article argues that the centrality of Christ is not one doctrinal theme among many, but the governing foundation of all faithful evangelistic practice. Christ is the definitive revelation of God, the content of the gospel, the sole mediator of salvation, and the Lord who commissions the church for mission. Therefore, any evangelistic practice that weakens the uniqueness, lordship, incarnation, atoning work, or resurrection of Christ risks losing its theological integrity even if it appears pastorally effective or culturally relevant (Packer 1993; Netland 2001; Piper 2010; Keller 2012).
The findings show that contemporary evangelism must be re-grounded in a robust Christological framework capable of holding together theological faithfulness and contextual responsiveness. Christological centrality protects evangelism from reduction into moralism, religious pluralism, therapeutic spirituality, institutional pragmatism, or vague spirituality. At the same time, it enables the church to proclaim the gospel meaningfully in changing cultural contexts because Christ is both the eternal revelation of God and the living Lord of the church’s mission. This article concludes that reclaiming Christological centrality is essential if evangelism is to remain biblically rooted, theologically coherent, and missionally faithful in the contemporary world (Newbigin 1989; Köstenberger 2020; Chan 2022).
